Skip Rock Shallow – Book Review


Synopsis (taken mostly from the back cover):
Lilly Corbett has just graduated from medical school and decided to accept an internship in the coal camp of Skip Rock, Kentucky. Her beau, Paul, is doing his residency in Boston and can’t understand why Lilly would choose to work in such a small, out of the way, town. Lilly grew up in the mountains though, so she’s drawn to the stubborn people she meets in Skip Rock. Skip Rock is a place where people live hard and die young, a place where women know their place. 

Lilly soon learns she has a lot to overcome, but after saving the life of a young miner, she begins to earn the residents’ trust. 
Torn between joining Paul in Boston and her love for the people of Skip Rock, Lilly crosses paths with a handsome miner – one who seems oddly familiar. Her attraction for him grows even more as she wrestles with her feelings and wonders what he’s hiding. 
What I thought: 
It actually really surprised me when I realized this, but some of my favorite books are the ones that deal with hardships the American people who lived in small, out of the way towns, a hundred or so years ago, endured. This is one of those books. 
I really thought that the fight Lilly went through to be accepted and trusted was well-worth reading. I found it very relatable, living in a small town myself. I also found the medical things she did pretty neat, although some might find them a little disgusting. 
I understood her relationship with Paul, and thought that it was very likely. Tern’s reactions, likewise, were believable. But as for Lilly’s relationship to Tern… It just didn’t seem very realistic. I read the book a couple of weeks ago, but as far as I can remember, that’s the only thing that stood out to me as something I didn’t like. 
The book is around 400 pages long, and it was good enough that I read it in about a 24 hour time period. Yeah, I really liked it. =) 
I would guess it would be for ages 15 and up.

It had some violence, some details of hardship, and other things along those same lines. It wasn’t a discouraging book, which is a plus for me!
